Could you change a child's future?

Adoption is a lifelong commitment, and one of the most amazing things you can do.  It is about providing a permanent family for children in care who cannot, for whatever reason, return home. Adopters take on all the rights and responsibilities for the child that birth parents had, offering a child stability, love and security within a family home, throughout their childhood and beyond.

The Portsmouth Adoption Service is a government organisation that recruits adopters from across Hampshire, within 50 miles of Portsmouth city (sometimes further afield).  We hold regular informations sessions twice per month, and have our popular recruitment event at Marwell Zoo on Sunday 15 October, 10am - 1pm.  This is a hugely popular event where you get the chance to meet the team and some of our current adopters of children.  To attend, you simply need to register your interest with us, and we will call you for a chat (places are limited and allocated via standard procedures).

We offer prospective adopters a warm welcome from many walks of life regardless of ethnicity, sexuality, whether you are married, remarried, single, part of a couple, in rented accomodation or a homeowner (a spare bedroom is a requirement).   We are a team of professional, friendly staff, with a flexible, 'can do' and helpful approach wherever possible, with exceptional levels of pre-adoption approval service and post-adoption support.

Our primary focus is to find the right family for the children Looked After by this local authority who need to be placed for adoption.  Therefore you are valued highly by us, and we need adopters for children of all ages, especially children aged 3-7 years and siblings.

If you are thinking of adopting a child or young person we will try to make the process as quick, clear and seamless as possible, and remember, people often just like you can adopt.

As the adoption team for Portsmouth we will:

  • treat you with courtesy and honesty
  • respect your wishes
  • work in partnership with you
  • keep you informed at every stage of the process
  • give you the information you need to help you make the right decisions

Fostering for adoption

There are some cases where a child is likely to have a plan for adoption but may need a fostering placement in the first instance whilst decisions are made in respect of their need for permanence.

Such placements are known as fostering for adoption and you may be interested in becoming an adopter with this in mind.

Our adoption workers will be able to provide more information regarding Foster for Adoption should you wish to know more.

Post adoption support

We regard adoption as a lifetime commitment for you and recognise the additional responsibilities that it brings. We will provide you with a leaflet entitled 'Helping you after adoption' and ensure that you have contact names and telephone numbers should you need to get in touch with us.

It is likely that you will remain in touch with the adoption manager who is responsible for the Portsmouth adoption information exchange, the mechanism by which adoptive parents and birth families keep in touch about the child's progress over the years, without revealing their address.
